Hiking in the De Biesbosch National Park

The Dutch National Park De Biesbosch is a very watery nature and recreation area. Characteristic are the freshwater tides, creeks and willow tidal forests. It consists of a number of river islands and sand and mud flats in the provinces of North Brabant and South Holland. They are located between the rivers Beneden-Merwede and Amer, and are intersected by the artificial river the Nieuwe Merwede. On the east side, the area is bordered by the Land van Heusden and Altena. It can be divided into the Brabantse Biesbosch and the Hollandse Biesbosch, the latter consisting of the Sliedrechtse Biesbosch and the Dordtse Biesbosch. In 1994 the region was given the status of a national park, it has since been officially called De Biesbosch National Park and is on the list of protected nature reserves. The Biesbosch is partly used agriculturally, is equipped for various forms of recreation and also offers space for storing clean surface water in specially constructed reservoirs for the continuity of the drinking water supply.
