Instructions and background information for using the Route Tracking application.

Important!

To be able to follow a route with the application, it is important to make the following preparations:

Operation

Route Tracking is a web application. The application is loaded via the internet from a server the moment you open it and runs in your web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, etc.). The application uses the location service of your phone to determine where you are at any time. Your telephone will request your permission for this use.

Your location is requested at short intervals. The first location determination is used to create a starting point on the route. A map is shown with the route. The starting point is indicated by the head of the walk (trail head) icon.

Two instructions are displayed at the top of the screen. The first concerns information about the section you are on. The second indicates how many meters you should perform a certain action: turn left, turn right or go straight, plus information about the section between that and the subsequent instruction.

Every time the application receives a new location, the following adjustments are made on the screen:

  • the measured location is shown on the map with a circle filled in blue, purple or red;
  • the map is centered on the measured location;
  • the progress on the route is marked with a transparent blue arrow;
  • the distance to the second indication is updated;
  • when you pass the second indication, this indication becomes first and the next indication is displayed as the second;
  • at the bottom next to the button, the distance traveled (left) and the distance still to be traveled (right) are updated.

When you get close to the last indication, automatic tracking is stopped and a screen is displayed with information about the route you have taken.

You can perform other tasks on your phone during the walk. For example, calling, taking a photo or reading a message. However, the Route Tracking application is then not active: your location is not requested and the progress is not updated. Therefore, return immediately as soon as the other task is ready.

Accuracy

The accuracy with which your location is determined depends on your telephone device. If your device is equipped with GPS, the accuracy will generally be sufficient for using the Route-tracking application.

However, it is possible that a series of measurements are made with (very) large deviations. The application cannot show the progress properly. The measured location is displayed with a different color at large distances from the route: purple at 75+ meters; red at 100+ meters. The progress arrow and distances may not be updated or not updated correctly. Read under How to operate? what you can do to resolve this.

   0-75m     75-100m     >100m

If you deviate from the route with the walk, you can see this because the measured location first purple and then red is indicated. A crumb trail from these measurements is also left on the map. You can use this track to possibly return to the route.

How to operate?

Press button to start automatic measurement of your location.

At the bottom 2 hands appear on the screen:
☚ to the left of the display of the distance traveled, and
☛ to the right of the display of the distance still to be covered.

Use the hands to make manual corrections to the progress. To the right the progress increases, to the left the progress decreases. Correction may be necessary if a series of automatic measurements of the location with large deviations are made. Or if no measurements were taken for a longer period of time because you used a different application on your phone. Even with sharp turns or return along the same path, the system sometimes needs a little help.

Press button to pause the automatic measurement of your location. In the box of the map, data is now shown about the measurement period just ended.

Below are the options for the sequel:

With follow route automatically a new measurement period is started and the automatic measurement of your location is resumed. A new starting point on the route is also determined. As a result, you can also use this option after returning to the route if you have deviated from the route.

With follow route manually also starts a new measurement period, but in this case without automatic measurement of your location. You now have to keep track of the progress on the route yourself. You can use ☛ for this. Approximately 5 meters of progress are recorded with every click. With ☚ you can correct the progress if necessary.

Option reverse route is identical to automatic route tracking with the difference that the route is first reversed. Use this option if you do not want to continue the route but want to return to the starting point via the same route. This is of course also possible at the end of a line walk.

Use the close application option at the end of the route or if you want to end the walk with the Route Tracking application. You will be asked to give a concise feedback. We use your feedback to improve the application.

Choose one of the options and confirm it by pressing the button.

Initial loading

As soon as you open the application, it starts loading the program code and the map material. This involves quite a lot of files. That is why it is important to open the application in a place where you can make a good connection to the internet.

Battery use

For automatic tracking, the application makes intensive use of the location service of your telephone. As a result, the battery usage may be higher than you are used to. At the same time you depend on your phone to find the right way.

Therefore make sure that your phone is fully charged before you start the walk. In addition, it is wise to bring extra power, for example in the form of a Power Bank (portable charger).

If you notice on the road that your battery consumption is going too fast and it becomes uncertain that you can follow the entire route, turn off automatic tracking. Look under How to operate? for how you can do this.

Instructions

  • Open the application in a place where you (still) have a good connection to the internet.
  • Go to a place close to the route (max. 100 meters) before you start automatic tracking with the button.
  • In the case of deviating measurements: keep an eye on the progress on the route!
  • If the automatic progress report is lagging behind: press ☛ until the blue arrow indicates the correct position.
  • If the automatic progress report is running ahead: press ☚ until the blue arrow indicates the correct position.
  • If you leave the route on foot, it is not necessary to correct the progress.
  • You can use the red crumb trail for orientation, and possibly later return to a point on the route.
  • If you return to the route after leaving the route, press the and buttons in succession to create a new starting point.
  • Pause the automatic measurement of your location with the button when you enter a building or take a break.
  • As soon as you resume the walk after a building visit or break, press button to restart the automatic measurement of your location.
  • After performing another task on your phone, return directly to the Route Tracking application.
  • Close the application at the end of your walk or if you decide to stop following the route with the application.
