North of the Sicilian towns of Noto and Avola, in the province of Syracuse, the Cassibile River has eroded a large gorge in the limestone of a spur of the Monti Iblei. The vertical walls reach up to 250 metres high. Several small lakes (laghetti) have formed in the riverbed. On the northern side of the gorge you can find ancient rock dwellings and necropolises. Since 1984 the area has been protected as Riserva naturale orientata Cavagrande del Cassibile.
