The Zingaro Nature Reserve was established in 1981 to protect both nature and historical remains and to make them accessible to the public. It is located almost entirely within the municipal territory of San Vito Lo Capo. It extends along approximately seven kilometres of unspoilt coastline of the Gulf of Castellammare and its mountain range, the setting of steep cliffs and small bays.
The Zingaro Reserve has a great variety and abundance of rare and endemic plants, as well as a rich fauna. The area also has a rich archaeological past; for example, the spectacular Grotta dell'Uzzo was one of the first prehistoric settlements in Sicily. The reserve has a complex network of paths, shelters, water taps, picnic areas, museums, car parks and other facilities; there are no roads and it can only be visited on foot.
The Zingaro Reserve includes not only the land and the beaches, but also the adjacent sea. The beautiful beaches, paved with pebbles and lapped by the clear blue sea, can be reached via several fairly steep paths.
