Circular walk from Leeuwarden past Frisian villages.
The walk starts at the bridge over the Dokkumer Ee. You walk along the Dokkumer Ee to the Leeuwarder Bos. Then you walk with a path through the meadow to Jelsum.
There you walk along the Dekemastate from the 15th century. It has been inhabited by various noble families. The building was restored in 1996 and now it is a museum. The Dekemastate has beautifully landscaped gardens.
After the Dekemastate you walk past the Sint Genoveva church, which dates from the 12th century.
You leave Jelsum and walk via the Aldlansdyk to Cornjum. You pass the Martenastate burial mound and you then arrive at Martenastate. The original building at this location dates from the 15th century. This was demolished and replaced in 1900 by the current miniature castle. Nowadays there is a nature campsite on the estate.
Opposite the Martenastate is the Reformed Church.
The route then follows the road to Britsum. The Johannes Church from the 13th century is on the high mound of Britsum.
You continue through the Aldlansdyk through rural areas to the Dokkumer Ee. You cross the Dokkumer Ee with a ferry at Wyns, the Wynser Oerset. Check the opening times on www.dewinze.nl.
On the other side you walk past the 13th century St. Vitus church.
You leave Wyns and walk parallel to the Dokkumer Ee through rural areas to Lekkum. Here you walk past the Cecilia Church (1778).
Then the walk goes to Snakkerburen. You walk along the picturesque Oan e Ie, a street along the Ee.
From Snakkerburen you walk into Leeuwarden and you come back to the starting point of the walk.
