Walk through Silves. Silves was the capital of the Algarve during the Arab occupation.
The route goes along the Rio Arade, a tidal river, to Silves. There you walk through the historic city center. The beautiful old castle of Silves is located on the highest point of the village.
The walk continues to the Silves windmill. There you have a wide view of the area. You occasionally walk along irrigation canals.
On the way back you visit the town again and walk back via the Ponte Romana along the Rio Arade.
The walk starts at Tapado do Granacho. You walk along the Rio Arade, a tidal river. Along the way you will pass a number of large farms. You walk on to the Ponte Romana, a medieval bridge from the 14th / 15th century.
You cross the Rio Arade and walk into the old town. You walk along the Igreja Nossa Senhora dos Mártires, which was originally built in 1189. There is a statue in front of the chapel in memory of the reconquest of the city on the Moors.
You walk on the road until you turn to an irrigation canal. You follow that until you reach the road again. Then you walk to the windmill that stands on top of a hill.
From the windmill you have a nice view of Silves and the castle.
You walk down from the windmill. You walk along irrigation canals and you pass an aqueduct.
You walk via the Estr. do Monte Branco and R. de Trás dor Muros back to Silves.
You walk past the castle of Silves. This originally Roman settlement was reinforced by the Moors in the 8th and 9th centuries. In the 13th century it was further strengthened by the Portuguese.
At the castle stands the Cathedral of Silves, built from the 13th century.
The walk continues through the center of Silves to the Ponto Romano, a medieval bridge. You cross the bridge and walk back along the Rio Arade down to the starting point.
