Ria Formosa is a 60 kilometer long lagoon on the south coast of Portugal near Faro, Olhão and Tavira. It is an important nature reserve, where also economic activities take place. In the area you can find many traces of the formerly dominant salt production. Nowadays you will find fish farms here and tourism plays an important role. The lagoon gives access to the harbor of Faro.
The visitor center of the nature reserve is located near Olhão. The terrain gives a nice overview of the variety of landscapes: dunes, salt pans, the lagoon, view of the island of Ilha da Armona with village and beaches. You walk on the grounds of the visitor center.
Pay attention! You have to pay a small amount for access to the area.
