Grasmere and Rydal Water

Circular walk, 10 km

Route: Grasmere and Rydal Water

Walk around the lakes Grasmere and Rydal Water.

We walk from the Saint Oswald’s Church in Grasmere Village to the Wordsworth Museum and the Dove Cottage, the house where the poet William Wordsworth lived from 1799 to 1808 with his sister Dorothy. We continue the road in the direction of White Moss and Ambleside. On the path of the Coffin Route we reach the village of Rydal. On the way we have beautiful views to the right on the Rydal Water. We pass Rydal Mount, the house where Wordsworth lived from 1813 to 1850. The house and its gardens are open to visitors.

We cross the A591 and the River Rothay and continue the route on the south side of the lakes Rydal Water and Grasmere. The path leads through a park-like landscape. Before the Grasmere we take the path Loughrigg Terrace, which runs higher along the lakes and offers beautiful views. We descend a path through Deerbolts Woods and follow the path along the Grasmere. With the Red Bank Road we return to Grasmere Village.
