Hiking in the Ebro Delta Natural Park

The Ebro is a river in northern Spain. It rises in the Cantabrian Mountains and flows 925 kilometers to the east to flow into the Mediterranean Sea in the province of Taragona (Catalonia). From the place Amposta, the river forms a delta. A lot of rice cultivation takes place in this fertile and water-rich area. But in addition, the area also represents important natural values. It has a great variety of landscapes: river with riparian forests, lagoons, salt pans, reed beds, sandy beaches, dunes. The confluence of fresh and salt water creates an environment in which about 50 species of fish thrive. There are more than 360 bird species, 95 of which breed in the delta. The Catalan government created the Ebro Delta Natural Park (Catalan: Parc natural del Delta de l'Ebre) in 1983 to better protect nature.
