Hiking in Gaasterland

Gaasterland (Frysk: Gaasterlân) is a sloping and wooded region in the southwest of the Dutch province of Friesland (Frysk: Fryslân). In the Saalian Ice Age, boulder clay ridges were built up here, which were subsequently covered with a layer of sand. The boulder clay ridges form a natural sea defense against the water of the former Zuiderzee and the current IJsselmeer. The highest point of Gaasterland is located on the edge of the Jolderbos, near the village of Oudemirdum (Frysk: Aldemirdum): 12.70 meters above NAP.
