On the eastern side of Sicily lies the volcano Etna. With its height of 3403 meters it towers enormously above its surroundings. The mountain is, after Stromboli, the most active volcano in Europe. Etna covers an area of 1570 km², its diameter is about 45 kilometers. On its slopes you will find enormous lava fields, formed by the regular eruptions, for centuries.
In 1987, the regional park Parco dell'Etna was created to protect the unique flora and fauna of the landscape around the volcano from arbitrary economic and tourist development and to centrally control the use of the area.
