Hiking in the Nature reserve Pantalica Valle dell'Anapo e Torrente Cava Grande

The nature reserve “Pantalica, Valle dell’Anapo e Torrente Cava Grande” was created in 1997 to protect both nature and historical remains and to make them accessible to the public. It is managed by the “Servizio per il Territorio di Siracusa”. The natural park extends largely over the territory of Ferla, Cassaro and Sortino, where the largest European necropolis is located with about 5,000 tombs dug into the rock and overlooking the gorge. It is crossed by the Anapo and Calcinara rivers that flow through the V-shaped canyons that are characteristic of the area. A section of the former railway line from Syracuse to Ragusa via Giarratana also passes through the area.
