The Sound

Circular walk, 14 km

Route: The Sound

A nice walk from Port St Mary to Port Erin along trails along the coastline. These paths are part of the Council on Foillan, the coastal path around the entire island of Man. On quiet roads you cross the headland of Cregneash and The Howe to come back from Port Erin to Port St Mary.

From the start at Kallow Point you first walk around the beautiful Perwick Bay. There are rough cliffs, Kione y Ghoggan with The Anvil and The Sugarloaf, a rock in the sea where the gulls breed. A little further on there is an area with deep cracks in the landscape, caused by landslides, The Chasms.

On the Cape Spanish Head are beautiful views, including on the island Calf or Man, which is separated from the main island of Isle of Man by the strait The Sound. Here you walk along with the route. On or around the mini-island Kitterland in The Sound you can almost certainly spot seals. Dolphins and basking sharks are also regularly seen in the Sound. On the path to the north, towards Port Erin, you have a beautiful view of the Shen valley. here, too, are rugged cliffs. Arrived at Port Erin Bay, we see Milner’s Tower (1871) on the other side of the bay. We descend to Port Erin and walk a little over the beach.

On the east side of the headland we arrive at the Port St Mary Bay. We follow the beautiful footpath Karran Quirck. Past the harbor you will find the starting point of the walk.
