A walk along the Ciane river from the Ponte di Pietra to the source of the river. Along the entire route you will find papyrus plants along the river. On the way there you will make an extra loop along a stream that flows together with the river. On the way back you will follow the path a little further along the river on the other side of the Traversa Ponte di Pietra. There you will find a beautiful pond with palm trees and you can admire even more papyrus plants.
Papyrus reed
Papyrus reed (Cyperus papyrus) or papyrus plant is a marsh plant from tropical and subtropical Africa. The species belongs to the sedge family Cyperaceae. The plant forms long triangular stems from which fan-shaped long thread-shaped leaves emerge at the top. It is best known as the basic material from which sheets of papyrus were made on which writing was done in ancient times. The word paper is also derived from this.
In Europe, the plant only occurs in the wild in Sicily in a few sheltered places. A well-known habitat near Syracuse is the protected marsh delta near the harbour.
