IJ east

Circular walk, 10 km

Route: IJ east

This walk around the eastern part of the IJ goes through Zeeburg, the Indische Buurt, Schellingwoude and Nieuwendam. A large part concerns dikes: the Zeeburgerdijk, the Zuider IJ-Dijk, the Noorder IJ-Dijk, the Schellingwouderdijk and the Nieuwendammerdijk. The IJ is crossed twice: via the Oranjesluizen, which form the border between the IJ and the Buiten-IJ, part of the IJ lake; and by ferry from the Zamenhofstraat to the Azartplein.

You walk through the Eastern Docklands, redeveloped as a residential area in the 1990s, through the Flevopark and along the Nieuwe Diep. Then with the Amsterdamsebrug over the Merwedekanaal, over the Zeeburgereiland, via the Oranjesluizen to Schellingwoude. Continue through Nieuwendam and through the Vliegenbos to Zamenhofstraat, where you take the ferry to return to Azartplein.
