Marken

Walk over the dikes that border the island of Marken. The walk starts in the center and first goes through the neighborhood Kets to the harbor. From there we walk first across the dike south to the point where the island, as with an umbilical cord, is connected to the mainland by the Kruisbaakweg. On the right we see the Gouwzee and behind it the coast of the mainland, Waterland with the town of Monnickendam.

On the other side of the road we follow the dike north-east to the Paard van Marken, the lighthouse on the easternmost point of the island. On the right we look at the vast Markermeer, in clear weather you can see the coast of Flevoland with behind it the tall buildings of Almere. On the left we see pastures intersected with capricious ditches. In the meadows we see the neighborhoods Wittewerf, Grotewerf, Rozewerf and Moeniswerf.

At the lighthouse is a beach with some benches and picnic benches. We walk further along the dike on the north side of the island. We walk past the Minnebuurt, a new neighborhood. On the right we look over the Markermeer. In clear weather you can see the contours of Hoorn in the north.

From the most northerly point of the island a dike of two and a half kilometers runs in a north-northeast direction, the Bukdijk. The dike was intended for the impoldering of the Markerwaard. The dyke now partially separates the Gouwzee from the Markermeer and acts as a nature reserve. We walk down the dike to the end. At that point we are only 1.3 kilometers away from Volendam.

Back from the Bukdijk we continue the dike southwards. The dike ends at the harbor. We make a detour through the Kerkbuurt.

Wandeling over de dijk van de haven tot aan de vuurtoren Het Paard van Marken.

stage 2 - Marken B (5 km 402)

Wandeling over de dijk van de vuurtoren naar de Bukdijk en over de Bukdijk tot het einde.

stage 3 - Marken C (4 km 391)

Wandeling terug over de Bukdijk en over de dijk naar de haven en vervolgens een ommetje door de Kerkbuurt.
