A region in the east of Friesland which is located on relatively high sandy soils. Characteristic is the so-called bocage landscape, which is formed by earthen wall overgrown with trees and shrubs, which serve as a partition. The area is an offshoot of the Drents Plateau. In the northern part is the National Landscape Noardlike Fryske Wâlden (Northern Frisian Woods).
