Hiking in the Hunsrück

The Hunsrück is a low mountain range that is part of the Rhenish slate plateau in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate and a small part in Saarland. The mountain range is bordered by the Rhine in the east, the Moselle in the north, the Nahe in the south and the Saar in the west. Part of the mountain range is protected and is part of the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park.

The area is relatively sparsely populated. There are two medium-sized cities on the Moselle, Trier in the west and Koblenz in the far north-east of the Hunsrück. The villages are often located on the tops of the hills, surrounded by fields and fields. We find forests in the stream valleys.

The highest mountain in the Hunsrück is the 818 meter high Erbeskopf near Thalfang. This peak is at the same time the highest point on the German left bank of the Rhine and of the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
