The Nieuw Land National Park, established in 2018, is located in the province of Flevoland. It includes Oostvaardersplassen, Marker Wadden, Lepelaarsplassen, Trintelzand and part of the Markermeer. Oostvaardersplassen form a nature reserve that was created between Almere and Lelystad after the Flevopolders were drained. It is a wetland area and an important wintering area for birds. Marker Wadden consists of 5 artificially created islands in the Markermeer between 2016 and 2021. They are uninhabited and intended as a nature reserve and to a limited extent as a recreational area. On the main island there are hiking trails. Lepelaarsplassen form a small nature reserve between Almere Stad and the Markermeer. Trintelzand is a small nature reserve that consists of marsh, sandbanks, dams, mud flats and reed beds. It is located against the Houtribdijk, on the north side of the Markermeer.
