You walk from the parking lot at the ruins of the castle to the path that descends into the Cava Carosello. You walk through the gorge to the Lago Pensile di Cava Carosello. From there you walk on a wide path to the SP64. You walk up the SP64 and you pass several ruins. You walk further until you arrive back at the Porta della Montagna in Noto Antica.
Noto Antica (263 BC - 1693 AD)
Noto antica or Netum, is the ancient town of Noto destroyed following the earthquake of 11 January 1693. Municipium under Roman rule, Capovalle from Arab domination onwards and decorated with the title of Civitas ingeniosa by Ferdinand the Catholic, it was home to many prominent figures between the 14th and 16th centuries, as well as one of the main cultural, military and economic centers of south-eastern Sicily. Surrounded by imposing walls (many of which are still standing) and deep valleys of Mount Alveria, it was never taken by force. Only the violent earthquake of 1693 at 1:30 pm managed to destroy it, causing over 60,000 victims in the Val di Noto. The seismic event is today considered the strongest earthquake ever recorded in the entire Italian territory.
