The Marker Wadden consists of five newly created islands in the Marker lake. It is a nature reserve. Only the main island has limited public access. Walking is permitted on the beach and paths. During the bird breeding season, from mid-March to the end of July, a section of the beach and several paths are closed to walkers. The main island is accessible by ferry from Bataviahaven in Lelystad.
The walk covers all paths that are not closed during the bird breeding season. After disembarking from the ferry, you immediately begin the walk. Walk towards the Island Pavilion. Immediately afterward, head onto the beach, which you follow until the closure. Back on the main path, you soon arrive at the Steltloper lookout tower. From here, you can overlook the Marker Wadden and have a view across the Marker lake to the coasts of Flevoland and North Holland and the Houtribdijk, which connects both provinces.
You continue your walk between marshland and three silt fields, which are still being filled with silt from the Marker lake. A birdwatching screen has been set up between the first and second.
Then you walk along a dike along the Marker lake. You pass three fords, where fresh water from the lake flows into the silt fields, which have now been transformed into marshland. You arrive at a row of young dunes. In clear weather, you can see Enkhuizen from here on the other side of the Marker lake. The path follows the dune line. With dikes and boardwalks, you cross the watery landscape of the main island. You pass the Aalscholver birdwatching screen and the Duikeend and Lepelaar birdwatching huts.
Before returning to the ferry dock, take a short walk around the natural harbor of the main island. From the bridge before the closure, you have a beautiful view of the harbor and the settlement.
