Hiking in the Harz

The Harz is a low mountain range that lies slightly north of the center of Germany, at the intersection of the states of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. The highest point is the Brocken (1141m). The higher parts are very wooded, Norway spruce in the highest parts, slightly lower the beech forests dominate. Agriculture takes place in the lower parts.

The area around the Brocken is protected by the Harz National Park, which was established in 2006. In addition, there are 4 nature parks: Harz (Lower Saxony), Harz/Saxony-Anhalt, Harz/Sachsen-Anhalt (Mansfelder Land) and Südharz. In the South Harz there is an extensive karst landscape that is protected by the Biosphärenreservat Karstlandschaft Südharz.
